Controversy and vocal opinions are prominent elements of American culture.  For every major issue (or minor one) there seem to be an extreme range of opinions available in our media, either for or against.  Current events are continually being read or reported through prisms that reflect bias, political or otherwise.  Graphic design plays a role in all this through the conveyance of content.  A designer is generally hired in service of a client-who wishes to influence the public by crafting a specific message in print, video or packaging.  Here's your assignment:  Select a story that interests you from the newspapers provided and create a collaged poster (newsprint, paper, pen, pencil etc.) that includes images and text.  Once you have created the poster, change the text to take the opposite stance.  See if the image still works.  The assignment is crafted to pose questions like these:  How do messages and images combine to influence opinion?  Who responds to certain types of messages and why?  What is the role of the designer in society?
